What is RTI - RTI is basically short form of Right to Information which is a fundamental right of every Indian citizen as enshrined in the Constitution of India and on this basis only, legislature had passed the most valuable Right to information Act, 2005 on 15 June 2005 and the same came fully into force on 12 October 2005.

Why RTI - RTI though do not provide any Grievance redressal mechanism but still it is most effective legislation as far as fixation of accountability of public authorities is concerned.

It happens normally, thousands of times public authorities take general public for granted and keep on delaying matters connected to them. Though, with the help of RTI one can not force anyone to do a particular task in a particular manner but still, RTI helps bringing the same into limelight.

A simple RTI Application bind public authorities to explain what they did and what is yet to be done and therefore, it also binds them to do the same timely.

It happened with me too, there was a case and SDM was not making a property verification report. According to rules, the same was supposed to be made within 21 days but she kept on delaying the same and when 1 and half month passed and she still did not do that work which she was supposed to do within 21 days.

I just moved an application for information under RTI Act and the impact of RTI is this, that same report was made in just a day. That work which was kept pending from long 40-45 days. The same was done within a few minutes just because of a simple RTI application.

Who can file RTI - Every Indian Citizen has a right to file RTI application to seek any information except those specifically exempted under the Act.

What is Exempted under the Act - RTI act provides section 8 which contains a list as to on what basis RTI application may be rejected and information sought is not provided.  What Information is Exempted under the Right to Information Act, 2005

RTI plus RTS - How it works : RTI provides information and RTS can get your work done in time. RTS is Right to Service Act which notifies the specific time limits within which public services must be done and if there is any intentional and malafide delay, such public authority can even be penalized.

Informed Citizen Initiative - In every Democratic Country, Its citizens plays the most important role in its success and citizens can take active part in the governance only if they are well informed. Governance is anything that is connected to the Government whether state or central.
